Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to some of the most common questions about reflexology.

What happens during a treatment?

At first I will take a brief health history to determine the best course of treatment and ensure you can have reflexology treatments. I will also note a few details about your diet, lifestyle choices, exercise , etc.
If you choose choose foot reflexology, you will remain fully clothed, just be asked to remove your socks and sit on the recliner lafuma chair which I carry to my mobile visits or lie down on the massage couch if the treatment takes place in the clinic. Of course, you can opt to sit on your own sofa or armchair if you feel more comfortable there. I will gently wipe your feet with antibacterial wipes, examine them, then apply some oil or wax to help hand movements and start with some breathing exercises and gentle massage to help you relax and prepare for the treatment. During the course of the treatment I will use my thumbs and knuckles to apply pressure to specif reflex points on the feet in order to initiate responses in the body and feel subtle changes and imbalances. When those are found, I will manipulate them with specific reflexology techniques in trying to balance them and promote healing.

If you choose or you are recommended to have facial reflexology, similar procedure will follow. You will not have to remove your socks or any other clothes. You will be able to relax in the lying position in a recliner chair for mobile visits, or massage couch if you are in the clinic. Organic facial oil will be applied to your face according to your skin type, then reflexes corresponding to all the body parts that are mapped on the face will be stimulated with fingers using specific techniques with a very light pressure. The whole experience will be very relaxing. You can expect to doze off during the treatment.

After the treatment, I will discuss my findings with you, make some notes, and might offer some advise about lifestyle changes, water intake, exercise, etc. You will be given an after care leaflet with instructions and explained what to do in order to benefit from the treatments the most. We will also discuss at that point the requirement of any further treatments and, if needed, agree on the treatment plan.

How will I feel after the treatment?

The reactions to reflexology are very unique to each individual. Most people experience a feeling of deep relaxation and a sense of wellbeing. For some, however, reactions are more extreme and this is what reflexologists call a "healing crisis". This is completely normal; it is your body's reaction to the treatment and indication that your body works hard in order to restore the balance and homeostasis. The unpleasant symptoms normally subdue within 24-48 hours. Some of the normal reactions to the treatment are:

General tiredness or increased energy
Deep sleep
Relief from pain
A slight headache
Dizziness
Skin rashes (due to elimination of toxins)
Feeling thirsty, cold or hot, frequent bowel movements, diarrhoea (elimination of toxins), urination
Increased mucus (nasal discharge, vaginal discharge)
Emotional or psychological release (crying)

How can I counteract those symptoms after therapy?

Try to drink plenty of water for the rest of the day to help hydration, reduce the possibility of headaches and improve energy levels.
Avoid heavy meals, strenuous exercise on the day or long journeys to help your body readjust and re-balance.
Avoid caffeine and alcohol as these are stimulants and will reduce the effectiveness of the treatment.

How does reflexology work?

This is a difficult question to answer as there is no scientific proof as to how it really works. However, there are many documented studies that show the effectiveness of reflexology. It is believed that by applying pressure to certain reflex points on the feet or face that correspond to various organs and body parts, reflexologists can initiate reactions in the body which are passed by neuro-pathways. According to the TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), energy flows through the body via energy pathways. Any congestion in that flow manifests as an imbalance or disorder in the body. Applying pressure to specific points improves energy flow, unblocks congestion and thus enhances bodily functions.
Reflexologists will work on the feet/face by applying a gentle pressure to all of the reflexes, thus stimulating all areas of the body; as a result, the body's natural healing process is initiated.

How long will the treatment last?

Both foot and face reflexology treatments last about 1 hour. The initial appointment will be around 1h 30 min long due to consultation and taking of medical history.
If you choose to have a combined reflexology treatment (face and feet), please allow 1 hour 30 minutes for the treatment.
Indian head massage is a 30 minute treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

Usually, a client requires four to six treatments to feel the full benefits of the therapy and/or to overcome a particular problem. However, each client has individual circumstances, responds differently to treatments, therefore, it will be determined and tailored to each client's specific needs on a treatment by treatment basis.
After the symptoms are alleviated, many clients choose to have monthly treatments for maintenance and as a preventative health care.

Can anyone have reflexology?

Yes, most people are able to receive reflexology treatments. There are no age limits and reflexology is even suitable for babies. There are a few contraindications to reflexology such as deep vein thrombosis or blood clot, acute undiagnosed pain, gangrene, first trimester of pregnancy.
For some sensitive unstable conditions I might ask doctor's permission to treat.

Does reflexology tickle?

Many people have sensitive feet and imagine that Reflexology would not be appropriate for them as they are ticklish. However, because reflexology techniques are unique and it works by applying pressure to the feet, clients who generally have ticklish feet, to their surprise never find it a problem during reflexology treatment.

What if I need to cancel/rearrange my appointment?

It is understandable that at times you might need to rearrange your appointment due to unforeseen circumstances. Please give me at least 24 hour notice.
